Hi this is Dione from After the Rain Arts Therapy online. I’m here to talk to you a bit about depression. Now nobody really knows where it comes from. Why some people get it and not others. They’ve done lots of research and they know some of the risk factors and some of the protective factors, but they don’t really know why. Neither do I. But I do have some thoughts about it.
Negative thinking fuels depression
Two main thoughts I want to talk about today. For myself, I know that it’s a lot about negative thinking. The way I put it is that, for me, and not necessarily for you, Just for me, depression and anxiety are extreme manifestations of negative thinking. And when I worked hard on my negative thinking it made a big difference for my depression. And maybe it can make a difference for you.
Disconnection between inner belief about yourself and the life you are living
My other thinking – my other thought is disconnect. When we are living a life that is really disconnected from what we feel is right and true, in our bones, and our gut. Then often depression can happen. So some of the work that I do with my clients is to help them really connect with themselves – know themselves better. The better you know yourself, your values, your triggers, your strengths, your superpowers, things you like and the things you dislike. The more easily you can live true to those thoughts and beliefs. I mean that includes challenging some of your unhelpful beliefs, for sure, but the idea of knowing yourself, being really a true friend to yourself. And then living according to that. That is a way to overcome depression, in my opinion.
There are many opinions
Now you might hear some counsellors who disagree and that’s okay. You might disagree and that’s okay. I would love, seriously I would love, to have a discussion about what you think. I don’t think there is one answer but I do know that there is an answer for you.
